Karaivan's wife is raped and killed by Turkish soldiers in front of his and their daughter's eyes. He manages to escape their house, left burning by the soldiers, and hides in the forest living and taking care of the child in a cave, where he improvises bed and fire. Terrified from what could happen to his small girl, he raises her as a boy, teaching her to kill, fight, attack and run. Maria, on the other hand, bears a warm heart. She does not want to kill and rarely consoles to her fighting skills. When she grows up she falls in love with a muslim man, raising goats nearby. "Maybe there is only one God. Maybe we are just calling Him with different names." The young muslim goatherd is the first person to teach her the words "I love you!" in stead of "Kill!"
